Log Procurement

Timber is America’s greatest renewable resource. Since it is so abundant we must be even more careful not to waste any of it. Mother Nature has her own way of decimating this resource, so we often find ourselves salvaging all that we can before it is gone forever.

This is the philosophy of Way Out Sawmilling and Lumber. We will save and then process any log that has merchantable lumber contained in its size. Our minimum sizes are listed below:

Black Walnut
  • Logs must have a minimum of 12 inches on the small end
  • Logs must be cut in lengths of 6′ 6″, 8′ 6″, 10′ 6″.
  • Preferred lengths are 6′ 6″ and 8′ 6″ but any combination of the above lengths are acceptable.
All other species
  • Logs must have a minimum of 15 inches on the small end</li.
  • Logs must be cut in lengths of 6′ 6″, 8′ 6″, 10′ 6″.
  • Preferred lengths are 6′ 6″ and 8′ 6″ but any combination of the above lengths are acceptable.
  • Logs should be cut within the length limits to accommodate sweep, crook, and defects. If possible cut so the defects are on the end of the log.
  • Defective wood from rot, lightning strike, disease, or other cause must not exceed 50% of the volume of the log.
